Combatting the effects of air pollution on your skin

Combatting the effects of air pollution on your skin

Do you suffer with dry, sensitive skin? Have days when your pores are blocked and your skin has lost its lustre? If you live in an urban area, the problem could be air pollution.

We all know the damage that air pollution can do to the environment, but have you ever thought about the effect it has on your looks? As well as contributing to a variety of health problems, pollution has become an increasing skin concern. Exposure to air pollution can lead to a dull complexion, dry skin, sensitivity, eczema and premature ageing. In fact, recent research has shown that if you live in a polluted area, your skin can look older than it should by the time you’re 40!

How does this happen?

If you live in an urban town or city, microscopic particles of soot, smoke, acid and other pollutants which are smaller than your pores penetrate your skin on a daily basis. When these pollutants come into contact with your skin, they create what’s known as free radicals.

Free radicals are to blame for inflammation and reducing the skin’s ability to regenerate, which leads to the depletion of natural collagen and elasticity in the skin. This is why pollution can lead to premature ageing, as well as a variety of other skin problems.

How bad is the problem?

To give you an idea of the scale of the UK’s air pollution problem, London exceeded its legal limit for the whole of 2018 in the first few weeks of the year! The problem isn’t just confined to London though, more than 40 UK towns and cities have exceeded limits set by the World Health Organisation for air pollution.

So what can I do about it?

First of all, don’t worry. There are lots of things you can do to help protect your skin from the effects of urban living. Anti-pollution is the new beauty buzzword and there’s a fantastic selection of products available to help with this issue.

But which one should you choose?

The key to an effective anti-pollution skincare regime is to use natural products that are packed with antioxidants.

Why natural you ask? Aside from being gentle to the skin, many plant-based ingredients contain flavonoids that help to prevent the chemical reaction that causes free radicals. They also help to replenish the skin’s natural barrier to prevent further damage.

For example, our Antioxidant Facial Oil is enhanced with three rich oils to help nourish and hydrate the skin whilst combating the effects of air pollution. These include Rosehip Oil to nourish, Sacha Inchi to protect against oxidative damage and Cranberry Seed Oil to protect from environmental stressors.

Anti-pollution skincare tips

Follow these skincare tips to help protect your skin from the effects of urban living:

  1. Cleanse thoroughly. It’s vital you cleanse your skin morning and night to unblock your pores and remove any pollution particles.
  1. Try exfoliating twice each week to remove any dead skin cells and dirt, and also allow your skincare products to penetrate deeper into your skin.
  1. Layer products. This offers greater protection and creates a barrier between your skin and the environment. Try starting with a facial oil and following-up with a rich day and night cream that also offers UVA protection.

To conclude, here at Rio Rosa we love mother nature. That’s why our products are natural and kind to the environment. It’s why we only use sustainable ingredients and support the conservation of the rainforest.

Our final tip is to try and be more mindful of your own carbon footprint. If we all take small steps, we could make a huge impact on this green planet we call home.
