Find more time with a digital detox

It’s so easy to access the digital world nowadays - smartphones, tablets, wearable tech - we’re constantly connected. But have you ever considered just how much time you spend using digital devices every day?

If you added up the minutes you’ve spent scrolling through your social media feeds alone, you’d probably be shocked! Recent research suggests that the average person spends approximately two hours on social media every single day. This equates to a total of 5 years and 4 months over a lifetime! It’s scary to think we could miss out on so much of our lives by simply checking Facebook and Instagram.

We’re not suggesting you should stop using your smartphones or social media though. After all, they’re great tools for staying in touch with friends and finding out what your favourite natural beauty brands are up to (hello!). But ultimately, it’s all about achieving the right balance.

The solution? A digital detox to establish a new relationship with the digital world, and ultimately leave more time for you to focus on self-care. Here’s how…


Take baby steps. Turn off your notifications

When we see a notification pop up on our phone it’s so tempting to quickly take a look - regardless of what you’re in the middle of doing.

Instead of checking every notification as it comes through, give yourself an allocated time for replying to people several times per day. This will allow you to switch off your phone for key periods and truly focus on the job in hand.

You’ll be amazed how much more you get done!


Relationships

Free messaging apps and social media networks have made it so easy for us to stay connected with our friends and family. This is amazing, and can truly help to make people feel less isolated if they live alone or far away from family.

However, we’re all guilty of sending a quick text instead of picking up the phone to talk or popping round to see a loved one. Often, it’s because we’re so busy, but taking the time to meet up with a friend for a coffee or dinner is so much more fun and meaningful than typing a text. Plus, you get dessert!

Right, what time are we meeting?!


Try new activities

Even if you’re a gym fanatic, it’s highly likely you spend time flicking through your playlist or checking your texts between sets. Instead of doing this, try a new way to stay active that doesn’t involve your phone.

Whether it’s a yoga class, swimming or bowling with friends, some time away from the screen will allow you to focus on the activity in hand and perhaps even burn more calories!


Relaxation

There’s one place no smartphone should be - the bath! Light some candles, grab a book and your favourite indulgent beauty products and lock the door for a pamper sesh.

Our favourite bath time routine includes body brushing to boost the lymphatic system, exfoliating to polish away dead skin cells and nourishing our skin with a rich, creamy body butter. Hello smooth, beautiful skin!

Top tip: massage some of our hydrating Body Butter onto your feet after your bath and pop on some socks. When you wake in the morning you’ll have beautifully soft feet!


Avoid blue light before bed

If you simply can’t live without your phone during the day, try to turn it off at least one hour earlier each night. In fact, try to avoid looking at any screen - even the TV just before bed.

This will reduce your exposure to blue light, which has an effect on the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin. By ditching the tech, you might actually find you sleep better - bonus!

Pick up a book to unwind instead or prep yourself a healthy lunch for the next day - you’ll be thankful of that extra ‘me time’!
