It’s that time of year where leaves become colourful works of art, the air becomes crisp and Starbucks launch their revered Pumpkin Spice Latte. It’s around this time that we delve into the depths of our wardrobes and pull out our cosy woolly jumpers and fluffy socks. However, our wardrobe isn’t the only thing that needs a re-haul when the seasons change.
With Autumn comes a barrage of factors that can put strain and stress on your skin. Between the cold, crisp air outdoors, intense central heating in our cars and homes and an increase in hot, caffeinated drinks, it’s all too easy for our skin to become dull, dry and dehydrated.
Here are some top tips to ensure your skin stays radiant throughout Autumn:
Scrubbing off any dead skin cells is essential for creating a smooth base and removing the last traces of summer skin and festival glitter! Think of your skin as a canvas - it should be carefully prepared to ensure it looks radiant on its own but also that make-up looks flawless when applied on top.
Choose a gentle exfoliator which uses natural ingredients such as bamboo powder or crushed peach stones, rather than artificial exfoliants such as plastic microbeads. Apply the exfoliator to damp skin and massage in small circular motions for the best result. Facial exfoliating tools such as the LUNA go by FOREO are also a great option, and really handy when travelling!
Apply an oil or serum
Your skin has three layers, and each need some TLC from time to time. During the colder months, add an oil or serum to your skincare routine before applying your moisturiser to help keep your lower skin levels healthy.
You might want to look for an antioxidant facial oil, which are specially formulated to help replenish the skin’s natural defence against urban living. Alternatively, serums with nourishing plant extracts will help restore moisture and radiance to prolong that summer glow well into the colder months.
We all know that moisturising is essential, but this is even more true when it comes to warding off chapped skin brought on by cold air and winds. In addition to acting as a barrier against the elements, a good moisturiser will replenish any moisture lost throughout the day. Apply before make-up, after a shower and before bed to ensure skin stays plumped, radiant and protected throughout the day.
For an extra hit of hydration, consider adding an air humidifier to your home to help maintain moisture in the air. Aromatherapy vaporisers are another good option as they add moisture to the air, as well as a scent of your choice! Simply add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the water for a beautifully scented room.
Although this isn’t, strictly speaking, a skincare tip, staying hydrated is super important if you want gorgeous, dewy skin. The human body is made up of around 60% water, so keeping those water levels up is essential for making sure those hydrating benefits reach your skin.
Always keep a water bottle at hand so you’re more likely to sip throughout the day. It’ll help you concentrate and make you feel more energetic too - bonus!
