We’re all seeking that bronzed goddess look in summer. However, we also know that laying out in the sun exposes us to harmful UV rays which can result in us burning and, over time, serious skin damage.
The solution? Apply it yourself!
Tanning has fast become a staple for many people over recent years, but there are still a handful of us who are too scared to make the leap to home tanning thanks to that ‘you’ve been tangoed’ experience we’ve all witnessed.

- Always prep the night before you are wanting to tan. This will avoid skin irritation and leave more time for your tan to soak in too.
- Begin with a nice, long bath or shower. This will help to soften the skin and make hair removal much easier (not to mention it’s a great way to relax).
- Apply a gentle natural exfoliator or a body scrub in circular motions all over your body. This will slough off dead skin cells gently to leave you with a polished base and silky-smooth skin.
- If you can’t prep the night before, only moisturise particularly dry areas such as elbows, knees and knuckles to prevent that telltale orange staining. Using a hydrating moisturiser everywhere can act as a barrier on your skin, preventing the tan from taking hold properly.
When applying your tan, use a good tanning mitt. Work the product from your ankles upwards to avoid patchiness and streaks.
Once you've applied your tan, wipe your palms with a wet wipe to prevent orange palms!
Help your glow last longer by avoiding vigorous scrubbing.
Avoid soaps or shower gels with harsh ingredients such as SLS (sodium-laureth-sulfate) as they can cause dryness, reducing the life of your tan.
Moisturise daily. This will help to prevent dry, flaky skin, and will lock in moisture to make your tan look natural. We’d recommend a thick and creamy hydrating body butter.
The added extra - boost your tan with an antioxidant oil. Apply daily to your skin to ensure your colour and glow lasts (plus it perfectly hydrates your skin!)
