As it’s officially National Almond Day, we’re celebrating with reasons we love this nutty little powerhouse.
Here are some reasons to get almonds into your life:
Rich in essential vitamins
These nutrient-dense nuts contain all sorts of vitamins and minerals, including copper, iron, magnesium, calcium, protein, fibre, manganese, phosphorus and more! They’re also a good source of healthy fats, making them great for heart health, and full of antioxidants, helping to reduce oxidative stress throughout the body.
Mental and physical energy booster
With nutrients such as riboflavin and L-carnitine (which have been shown to increase brain activity), almonds are considered to be a fantastic brain food. Just 4-6 almonds a day are said to help improve intellect and memory function.
They’re also said to boost physical energy, with the presence of manganese, copper and riboflavin helping to increase metabolic rate. It’s safe to say they’re a much better alternative than sugary energy drinks!
Healthy snack alternative
Almonds are a low-carb desk snack which make a great alternative to that 3pm chocolate bar, and could be the answer to keeping your healthy diet on the straight and narrow. Plus, a handful of almonds will keep you feeling full for longer than a sugary treat could!
Not a fan of eating almonds? Try swapping out the cow’s milk in your cuppa for a splash of almond milk, or bake a healthy treat using almond flour.
Shiny hair treatment
Suffering from dry scalp and frizzy hair? It sounds like you need a deep almond oil treatment!
Simply apply a small bowl of warmed almond oil to damp hair, massage into the scalp and comb through to the ends. Put on a shower cap and leave the oil to soak into your hair and scalp for an hour before washing your hair as you would normally. The result? Lustrous, shiny hair and a nourished scalp.
For a quick fix to dry ends, warm a couple of drops of almond oil between your fingers and then run your fingers through the ends of your hair to tame flyaways and give your hair a sleeker look.
Mix sweet almond oil with sea salt or brown sugar to create a body scrub that will slough off dead skin cells whilst moisturising at the same time.
You could also the oil on its own as a moisturiser which will leave your skin feeling nourished, supple and looking glowing. It’s even gentle enough to use on babies!
